The Griot In Me focuses on three objectives - Documentation, Representation, and Collaboration

Phase One

Creating a Black Canadian Archives Guide themed around “Remembering”

This aspect of the project will focus on introducing archival concepts and terminology, outline requirements for an archival programming, provide general advice on establishing an archival program and to identify where additional information, advice and assistance can be found.

Phase TWO

Building Community Capacity and Trust

One of our values in being a community- led project is that we believe it’s our community's responsibility to carry their own stories forward. Through community outreach we will connect and collect archive submissions to be featured. We will provide educational workshops to engage with community members, to celebrate traditions, cultures and special practices in addition to creating the archive.

Phase three

Training of Black Youth to become their very own Archivist

This part of the project will consist of recruitment, mentorship and stewardship - the target audience will be Black youth ages 15-29 years old. We will implement skill building workshops through heritage based activities. Teaching methods will include peer to peer education, and mentorship opportunities with professionals in the Archive and Heritage field. The focus for the youth will be to create and publicize their own archival collection of Black Canadian businesses and entrepreneurs which will be shared locally and nationally. The goal of this training is to expose youth to educational resources, and avenues that normally wouldn’t be presented to them - to create an equal platform for their voices to be heard and their work to be recognized.
